Game updates: Nebraska 51, Washington 38 (final)

Fourth quarter

UW gets the ball again, but Keith Price, who seemed really banged up late in the game tosses an interceptionn to end the Huskies hopes.

4:27 -- Keith Price connected on a 52-yard ass to James Johnson to cut the lead to 51-38

4:42 -- Nebraska answers with a 6-yard TD run from Taylor Martinez.

7:21 -- Things are getting interesting a little bit now. UW just scored in just under a minute as a 25-yard Chris Polk run where he broke about six tackles, set up Keith Price's 10-yard TD pass to James Johnson for  touchdown. It's now 44-31.

10:15 -- UW is showing some pride and a little fight, they go down the field and get a couple of nice passes from Keith Price that leads to a 2-yard Chris Polk TD run. They are down 44-24.

12:18 -- Aaron Green with a 6-yard TD run as the Huskers are now pulling away. It's44-17.

Third quarter

7:20 -- A quick three and out by UW leads to a field goal from Nebraska after Martinez throws wildly and misses a wide open Ben Cotton in the end zone. It's now 37-17.

Jermaine Kearse and James Johnson go out after injuries on back to back play. This could get ugly.

10:09 -- Yep, you read that time right. On the ensuing kickoff, freshman Bishop Sankey bobbled the football and then he and Kevin Smith proceeded to fight for near the end zone. Nebraska recovered the ball on the 1-yard line and Rex Burkhead punched it in again. It's now 34-17

10:13-- Well, the refs step in again and whistle Washington with catch interference on a punt. And that 15 yard penalty along with a 5-yard penalty on Nick Holt for yelling at the refs. So it negated a pretty good punt for Kiel Rasp. The improved field positioned aided Nebraska as it  marched down and got a 1-yard TD run from Rex Burkhead to go up 24-17.

Halftime: Washington gets an awful break when it appears that a punt hit Nebraska return man Tim Marlowe on the foot and Jamaal Kearse astutely picked it up. Now you can't advance a muff punt. But UW would have had the ball inside the 30-yard line.  But the refs flagged Cort Dennison for fair catch interference.

It was just a bad call altogether. Multiple replays - since ROOT sports isn't televising the game - show that it was a bad call. Nebraska went down and got a field goal right before the half. It was basically at least six point swing and possibly a 10-point swing. It's Nebraska 20-17 at halftime.

Second quarter

9:24 -- The Huskies tied the game with a 40-yard field goal from Erik Folk. The reason UW had to kick the field goal was because Jared Crick tried drive Keith Price through the Memorial Stadium turf with a vicious sack. Price scrambled around to make time and scrambled right into trouble. To his credit, Price popped right up. On the drive, he did show good poise completing a 24-yard pass to James Johnson, but he had two throws which he probably wants back including a big miss on an open Jermaine Kearse in the end zone. Game tied at 17

12:17 -- So you know when coaches talk about the little things in a game mattering. The Huskies experienced it. After taking the lead, Nick Folk did his job by kicking the ball into the end zone and getting a touchback. But Will Shamburger was offsides for some reason. So the Huskies had to kick again from five yards deeper and of course Ameer Abdullah caught it and returned it 66 yards. Justin Glenn saved it from being a touchdown with the tackle.

But it didn't matter. Nebraska needed just four plays to score as they took advantage of zone blitz by the Huskies and defensive end Hau'oli Jamora trying to cover speedy tailback Aaron Green on a pass route. It didn't work as Taylor Martinez lofted a perfect little pass to Green for a touchdown. Nebraska leads 17-14

13:40 -- The Huskies take advantage of the Nebraska turnover as Price keeps his cool on third and goal, by avoiding the rush, keeping the play alive and finding Jermaine Kearse open in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown.

Just before the first quarter came to an end, the Huskies get a break as Ameer Abdullah bobbled a punt and it went up the air and landed in the hands of who else, Desmond Trufant. The Huskies got the ball on the Nebraska 23 yard line.

First quarter

7:49 -- The Huskers need score in just 1:47 as Taylor Martinez breaks lose for a 28-yard run. The Huskies come up big on third down with a sack from Cort Dennison to hold the Huskers to a 44-yard field from Brett Maher.

11:54 -- The Huskies answer with a precise six-play, 80-yard drive culminated by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Keith Price to a wide-open Jermaine Kearse. UW threw two screen passes on the drive, including a nice 12-yard gain to Kasen Williams. It's good to see him get involved early. He has the strength and size to battle the Nebraska DBs. Also Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a big catch on a 15-yard gain.

14:26 -- yes, that time is correct. It took all of 34 seconds for the Huskers to score 7 points. It happened like this. Erik Folk's kick was short and Ameer Abdullah spun off a Thomas Tutogi tackle and went 40 yards. On the first play from the scrimmage, Taylor Martinez faked the belly option, dropped back and hit wide receiver Kenny Bell, who had beaten Quinton Richardson on a post pattern by a half dozen yards for a 50-yard gain. Martinez then hit tight end Tyler Legate on a 3-yard out route for the touchdown.
