The Huskies have apparently added some much needed offensive line depth on Tuesday when Bellevue offensive linemen Jake Eldrenkamp (highlight video above) announced on his facebook page that he would be signing with the Huskies on Feb. 1
Eldrenkamp was supposed to announce his decision on Wednesday on the Dave "Softy" Mahler show -- the whole Bellevue grad thing.
But with rampant speculation on Twitter and some criticism trickling in, Eldrenkamp changed his mind and decided to do it his own way.
Posting on his facebook page ...
"I talked to coach Sarkisian tonight, I will be accepting a football scholarship to the UW."
At 6-5, 290 pounds, Eldrenkamp will play guard at the college level. He probably won't be someone that will contribute for a few years. But these are the types of kids you need in your program. And you can never have enough offensive linemen. Say what you want, but coming out of Bellevue, you know Eldrenkamp is fundamentally prepared and isn't afraid to work. The school has produced solid linemen, most recently David DeCastro and Steve Schilling.
I think Scout.com was the first to talk with him and post a story. But I'm not going to go back and check the twitter timeline to see who was first.
From the story from the Dawgman site.
I am going to be playing at Washington,” said Eldrenkamp. “I really felt like I just fit in there with the coaches and the players. I really saw myself at Washington.”
Eldrenkamp talked things over with his family as well as his high school coach before making the call late in the afternoon.
“I called Coach Sark earlier today and let him know, he was excited,” said Eldrenkamp. “I told him I would announce later tonight.”
Eldrenkamp had trimmed his list of schools down to Washington and Washington State, visiting the pair over the past two weekends.
“I liked a lot about Washington State,” said Eldrenkamp. “Obviously coach Leach coming to the program, he is going to turn things around. It intrigued me to be a part of that, but I liked what Washington had to offer.”How strong is he? Well here's video of him squatting 475 pounds.
