Monday practice report with Steve Sarkisian

Practice today was in the Dempsey Indoor facility with players in shorts and shoulder pads.

Center Drew Schaefer (knee) and outside linebacker Scott Lawyer (groin) did not dress. Both have missed the last few practices. Defensive end Talia Crichton was not dressed out today after suffering a slight knee injury during Saturday's scrimmage. True freshman running back Ryan McDaniel, who was recovering from ACL surgery, had a second procedure on the knee. Sarkisian said it was just minor surgery to clean up some stuff inside the knee - not uncommon.

Cornerback Greg Ducre (concussion) practiced today, but was wearing the red no contact jersey.

Redshirt freshman Jarrett Finau worked as the starting strong side defensive end with Crichton out.

The first-team linebacker crew was a little different with Thomas Tutogi playing with John Timu and Princeton Fuimaono. Taz Stevenson, who tweaked an ankle on Saturday, was working with the No. 2 defense, while Evan Seger did not participate in many team drills (not sure why).

Defensive tackle Danny Shelton drew the ire of Sarkisian during an early 11 on 11 drill when he basically tackled Jesse Callier on a play. Sarkisian yelled at Shelton to get off the field and the two exchanged a few words. Shelton stormed out of the practice facility. But Hao'uli Jamora and Crichton went and got him and brought him back. After doing some punishment laps with Ivan Lewis, Shelton was back with the first-team defense.

"It's just football," Sarkisian said of the incident.

Walk-on kicker Eric Nothstein of Graham-Kapowsin had the best day that any kicker has this spring. He went 5-for-5 in the first special team session. During 11 on 11 he missed about a 40 yarder, but came back to make a 25-yarder to win the overtime session for the offense and end practice.

Walk-on long snapper David Butler handled all the snapping duties today.
