Wednesday practice report with Steve Sarkisian video

Quick practice report

Erik Kohler worked out as the second-team center today, and also as the left guard with the first-team offensive line. He previously had been working at the right guard position with second team unit. Head coach Steve Sarkisian said the work at center is just a precaution should something happen to both Drew Schaefer and Mike Criste in a game.

Don't expect to see Kohler at tackle this fall. Sarkisian believes guard is his best position for success.

"I think guard would be the best thing for him," Sarkisian said. "He’s been exposed to quite a bit, obviously playing some guard his first year and getting out to tackle last year. So they experience of being a guard and being able to communicate really well and utilize his strengths. He’s a big guy, a physical guy and I just think that fits him better as well."

Another sort of position switch was seeing Nate Fellner playing close to the line of scrimmage as an outside linebacker. It was mostly during dime and nickel packages, though Fellner was with the linebackers in the post practice position group meetings.

"We are doing some different things as far as nickel packages and dime packages and it’s getting Nate down in the box and utilizing his strengths," Sarkisian said. "I think it’s a credit to Coach Wilcox and the defensive staff to try and identify those guys and the things they do well and put those guys in the position to do the things they do well. Nate is an excellent run defender. He’s really good around the box, so we’ll try and give him those opportunities."

CB Greg Ducre was a full go and made a couple nice plays on passes.

Drew Schaefer, Scott Lawyer, Talia Crichton did not participate.
