Wednesday night practice report with Steve Sarkisian video

It was a short practice by UW standards lasting only about an hour and 40 minutes. Why? Well, the Huskies went pretty hard tonight, doing a lot of 11-on-11 work.

After seeing the offensive tempo slog down in the past few practices, head coach Steve Sarkisian talked to his offense about seeing them get in and out of huddles quicker, lining up and making checks at the line quicker and playing at a higher speed. He saw that tonight.

"We were just holding some guys out," Sarksisian said. "There were a handful of guys we wanted to keep out because we knew it was going to be physical practice and it was."

Because of the physical nature of the practice, several players were limited. Recently converted linebacker Travis Feeney did not dress and was given the night off. Wide receiver Kasen Williams and cornerback Greg Ducre did not do much in the 11 on 11 drills. But that was also a chance for youngsters like wide receivers  Jaydon Mickens and  Kendyl Taylor and cornerback Brandon Beaver to get some reps with the first team.

On a positive note, wide receiver James Johnson (foot) and linebacker Princeton Fuimaono (hamstring) were full participants in practice which means they are coming back to form.

Sarkisian said that defensive end Hau'oli Jamora still hasn't had his arthroscopic knee surgery yet, but gave no further details as to what the hold up is or when it will be done.

Mickens had two really nice catches today with the first team. Twice he was able to get matched up with linebackers - once Fuimaono and once John Timu - both times he ran right by them and Keith Price delivered nice passes for big gains.

Mickens and Taylor certainly figure into the mix for that third receiver spot. They are competing with senior Cody Bruns and sophomore DiAndre  Campbell, who have done nothing to distance themselves from the youngsters this fall.

Sarkisian even admitted that the two freshmen bring an explosiveness to the position they haven't had.

"We are a bit more explosive offensively then we've been," Sarkisian said. "We have guys that can really run. And when you get them in space, they can make big plays."

First team units stayed roughly the same as they've been.

LB Thomas Tutogi (sprained knee) — did not practice and was wearing a brace on his knee

LB Nate Fellner (broken foot) — was not at practice.

CB Marcus Peters (sore back) — dressed out, but did not do much in practice.
