Video: Lorenzo Romar postgame

Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar said he was "proud" of his team for taking control in overtime after giving up a 16-point halftime in Saturday's 84-73 win over Seton Hall:

"It was a big-time effort on our guys’ part. In the first half, I thought we played exceptional defense. About as perfect a defensive effort as I’ve seen us play in a long time We boxed out, they had two offensive rebounds -- going into the game, that was a concern of ours. Second half, they got away from us. They began to drive us and we couldn’t get shots to go down. Went into overtime, gutsy effort by our guys in overtime."

"I thought Abdul Gaddy had an exceptional first half, maybe his best half of basketball since he’s been here. Scott Suggs, started out good, got in foul trouble, struggled and (played well in overtime).

"Maybe the star of the game, the MVP might have been Aziz N’Diaye with his defense on Edwin Teague. That guy’s a monster down there and he didn’t score a basket. Had a lot to do with Aziz’s defense."

When did you know Suggs would play? "Probably today after shootaround when he was able to go through contact and not have anything bother him."

Was it kind of a win just to get it to OT?  "It was. They had all the momentum in the world on their side and our guys found a way to get stops, found a way to make shots and send it into overtime."

The difference between Albany and the first half? "Night and day. Mainly on the defensive end. I thought we were sharp."

Does this help you move past Albany? "I think every team has a game or to like that every year. Hopefully that was ours and that was it."

Were you thinking about the Albany game when you blew the lead? "I don’t think we thought about Albany. I think if you look at our team, we thought just have to weather the storm. If we started to think about negativity, we’re doomed, the sky is falling, it would have fallen. But, our guys didn’t approach it that way. One stop at a time, persevered, ended up pulling it out."

Scrappy effort for Desmond Simmons tonight? "Desmond was sensational. That is the way we want Desmond Simmons to play. When he’s playing that way, he has a real impact on the game."

Difference in second half for Gaddy? "He started to miss shots, that’s all."

Did you have concerns in your scout about them shooting 3s? "Yes. We call it shooter closeouts. What ended up happening is they scored a couple off out of bounds, couple in ball screen situations where we didn’t play it the right way. The first half, that was their primary way of scoring. Aside from that, we shut them down pretty good."

Better dribble drive defense tonight? "We’re still working at it. I think you won’t find more than two times in 20 minutes they drove around us. That’s progress. That’s how I see it."

What did you think of Suggs at the start then end? "Little off. Rusty a little bit. He was huge. He played like a senior does on the road."

Proper word to describe this win? "Proud, as opposed to relieved. Proud how our guys battled."
