UW linebacker John Timu suspended for two weeks

Washington's first day of spring football practices concluded with the news that senior linebacker John Timu, a team captain, has been suspended and will miss the first two weeks of spring ball. Coach Chris Petersen said Timu will be able to return from suspension after spring break for UW's second session of practices. That begins April 1.

Petersen wouldn't elaborate on Timu's suspension.

Also absent on Tuesday was running back Jesse Callier, who Petersen said is handling an academic issue.

Timu recorded 77 tackles and two sacks last season, and was widely viewed as a leader of the defense.

Petersen has already suspended quarterback Cyler Miles and receiver Damore'ea Stringfellow after an alleged assault in the University District the night of Feb. 2.

Timu, Callier, Miles and Stringfellow were the only players on UW's roster who were not present for Tuesday's practice.
