Chris Petersen says Jeff Lindquist will start at quarterback for Huskies against Hawaii

Third-year sophomore Jeff Lindquist will start at quarterback in the Washington Huskies' season opener at Hawaii on Aug. 30, coach Chris Petersen announced a short while ago.

Petersen said the decision to start Lindquist over redshirt freshman Troy Williams was like "splitting hairs," and that both Williams and Cyler Miles -- who is suspended for the Hawaii game -- will factor into the competition going forward.

Lindquist appeared briefly in a couple blowout victories in 2013, but has not attempted a collegiate pass.

Petersen said Lindquist's ability to eliminate mistakes made him the best choice.

"He’s done a great job from spring until now. I will say this, Troy Williams has done a really nice job, too," Petersen said. "I think we’re splitting hairs trying to figure this out. Both have different skill sets they bring to the table. But I think at this point we just feel like we’re going to give Jeff the nod, let him roll, let him get some things done and go from there.

"I think when we probably were in scrimmage type situations, there might have been a few less critical errors out of him. They’re all such young guys that haven’t played a lot that you’re going to have those. That’s probably one thing right then and there. I think he made some plays when we scrimmaged. And so did Troy. I want to make that clear. This will to be a constant battle, a constant competition, and they’ve got to just keep improving and progressing and we’re excited to watch it."

Asked about Lindquist's progression since spring, Petersen said: "I think it’s not any one thing. I do think he’s throwing the ball a little more accurate. I think he knows where to go with the ball. He’s done a good job of not forcing the ball, making too many critical errors. We’re going to throw an interception on occasion. We’re going to fumble. We know that. We’ve just got to try to reduce those and minimize them. I think at this point right now, going in eight days out, he’s the guy that’s going to get the opportunity and I’m excited to see him go."
