Player of the week honors rolling in for LB Shaq Thompson

As the News Tribune's John McGrath wrote in his column today, Huskies linebacker Shaq Thompson had what could be considered a "career day" by scoring two defensive touchdowns against Illinois.

A day later, the junior is being recognized nationally for his performance.

Thompson, who returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown after returning an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in UW's 44-19 win over Illinois, was named the national defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and was given the same honor by Athlon.

Thompson is the second UW player to win the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week -- linebacker Donald Butler earned it in 2009 after the Huskies' upset of USC.

It's probably a good bet, too, that Thompson will win Pac-12 defensive player of the week when the conference announces its weekly awards on Monday.
