Robert Upshaw participating in all team activities for Huskies basketball team

The mystery surrounding Robert Upshaw, the Huskies' 6-foot-11 center, won't reach a resolution until UW takes the court for a basketball game and Upshaw is either in uniform or not.

What we do know, via a UW spokesperson, is this: Upshaw, who sat out the 2013-14 season after transferring from Fresno State, is participating in all team activities, including workouts, weight-lifting and the like.

What we don't know -- at least not for sure -- is whether Upshaw will certainly play for the Huskies in 2014-15.

The mystery stems from Upshaw's absence from the team bench during games last season, and from coach Lorenzo Romar's subsequent hesitancy to discuss Upshaw's status in any more detail than to say that "he's just doing his thing, getting everything right."

Romar told The News Tribune in late April that "this is a situation (where) before you can get on the court, whether it’s here or somewhere else, you just have to take care of your business away from the court.”

That's as specific as Romar has gotten. But the guess here is that if Upshaw is still with the program, still working out with the team and participating in all team activities, it seems more likely now than it did, say, five months ago that Upshaw will be able to play this season.

His presence could be a game-changer. Not only is he 6-foot-11, he's listed at a sturdy 255 pounds and looks the part of a true college center. Upshaw played in only 22 games as a freshman at Fresno State in 2012-13, averaging 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while playing an average of 16.4 minutes. He was dismissed from the program following the season, and landed at Washington, where Romar had recruited him out of San Joaquin Memorial High School, in September of 2013.

At the time, Romar said: "I think any time someone can go out and be responsible for their own actions, it’s a great start. And be prepared to and be willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. I think you’re heading in the right direction and those are the things we saw from Robert. Overall, across the board, it really gives him a chance to find himself."

It remains to be seen whether he will find himself in the Huskies' lineup this season. All indications seem to be suggest that it's possible.
