Pac-12 picks, Week 10: Liking the road underdogs this week

There are some tough picks on tap this week, with four of the Pac-12's ranked teams in action against each other, and the always-interesting Stanford-Oregon matchup. All of which will probably combine to drop my season record against-the-spread back below .500.

All games Saturday. All lines (in parentheses), for entertainment and gambling purposes only, are courtesy of And as always, our pick for the Huskies game will come in a separate post on Friday.

Last week: 6-0 straight-up, 4-1-1 against the spread

Season: 49-14 straight-up, 28-27-2 against the spread

USC at Washington State, 1:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks (USC by 9) -- The Cougars need to finish the regular season 4-0 to qualify for a bowl game, so maybe that whole backs-against-the-wall thing will give them a boost. Or maybe they'll be overwhelmed by the thought of having to beat USC, Oregon State, Arizona State and Washington in succession just to get to 6-6. If WSU is in this one in the fourth quarter, it will have a chance, because everyone has a chance in the fourth quarter against the Trojans. But given how bad WSU's defense has played, I don't see it getting to that point. The pick: USC 45, WSU 31.

Stanford at Oregon, 4:30 p.m., FOX (Oregon by 8) -- The Ducks meet their new old nemesis again, though the Cardinal aren't what they've been the last four years. Still, if there's a defense in the Pac-12 that can contain Oregon's offense well enough to at least have a chance, it's Stanford. I see a tie game at halftime, a 7-point Ducks lead to begin the fourth quarter, and a late Oregon score to put it away. The pick: Oregon 31, Stanford 17.

California at Oregon State, 7:30 p.m., ESPN (OSU by 4) -- A pair of teams that could really use a victory to aid their bowl hopes. The loser will probably struggle to avoid fifth-place in the Pac-12 North. I see a season-saving win for the Golden Bears, behind a big day from Jared Goff and Daniel Lasco. But the Beavers will score points. The pick: California 42, OSU 38.

Arizona at UCLA, 7:30 p.m., ESPN (UCLA by 6.5) -- This spread opened at four points but moved in the Bruins' favor, which is a little hard to figure since UCLA is coming off an unimpressive, double-overtime win at Colorado, and the Wildcats thrashed WSU in Pullman last week. And after watching the Bruins struggle to slow Colorado's offense last week, it's hard to imagine they'll fare much better against Anu Solomon and his band of really good receivers. The pick: Arizona 41, UCLA 34.

Utah at Arizona State, 8 p.m., FOX Sports 1 (ASU by 6) -- Two of the hottest teams in the conference right now, and a second consecutive touch Pac-12 South matchup for the Utes. Taylor Kelly says he's fine after taking a big hit late in ASU's win over Washington last week, and something tells me it won't be raining sideways with winds swirling all night in Tempe, like it was in Seattle. That should help Kelly and ASU's passing game, which should be on alert after allowing seven sacks last week and now facing the nation's most productive pass rush. Sun Devils have to stop Devantae Booker. They'll do that just enough times to win. The pick: Arizona State 28, Utah 24.
