Danny Shelton, Hau'oli Kikaha named academic All-District

Huskies defensive tackle Danny Shelton and outside linebacker Hau'oli Kikaha were each named Capital One Academic All-District winners from District 8.

The Capital One Academic All-District honors were announced and Washington senior defensive tackleDanny Shelton and senior linebacker Hau’oli Kikahawere named District 8 winners. The Huskies’ duo will now go on the Academic All-America ballot with winners announced later this month.

Shelton and Kikaha are the Huskies’ first Academic All-District winners since offensive lineman Kyle Benn in 2001. The Huskies have not had a national Academic All-America winner since wide receiver Dave Janoski was second team in 1996.

Shelton is a two-time first-team Academic Pac-12 selection.  The Auburn, Wash., native is an anthropology major that has a 3.54 grade point average. This quarter, Shelton is serving as a First-year Interest Group (FIG) advisor, where he guides a classroom of freshman students through their first quarter of school. 

Shelton is also a standout on the football field. He was honorable mention All-Pac-12 last season, but has upped his game to new heights. Through nine games, Shelton leads the team with 70 total tackles and is second with 7.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss. He was named a midseason All-American by ESPN, and The Sporting News.

Kikaha was first-team Academic All-Pac-12 and second-team All-Pac-12 in 2013. The American Ethnics Studies major from Laie, Hawai’i, sports a 3.51 grade point average.

He is a the national leader in both sacks (15.5) and tackles for loss (21.5) and holds both Washington’s single-season and career records for sacks. Kikaha is a semi-finalist for the Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award and Butkus Award and was named Midseason National Defensive Player of the Year by ESPN’s Mel Kiper.
