Day 9: Huskies practice light after Saturday scrimmage

After scrimmaging on Saturday afternoon – it was closed, so details from that session are limited – the Huskies didn’t wear pads for their relatively short workout on Sunday at Husky Stadium.

It was the only open practice of camp, with Picture Day held on the field afterward. I’m awful at estimating crowds, so I’ll just say that the event seemed to be better attended than one would typically expect (unless one is from Alabama or something).

Anyway, due to the light nature of the practice, there isn’t a lot to pass along, but here are a few notes and observations.

--- The highlight of the day was probably Jeff Lindquist’s 56-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Hall, who used his speed to run past the secondary. It was a nice throw, but Hall was pretty wide open.

--- The defense forced three turnovers. First, Brian Clay intercepted an overthrown pass by quarterback Jake Browning during the first 11-on-11 period. Later, Travis Feeney made an impressive interception on a Browning pass intended for Brayden Lenius, one play after Browning found Lenius on a nice slant pass.

And quarterback Tony Rodriguez mishandled a snap that freshman linebacker DJ Beavers pounced on in the backfield.

--- Lindquist also had the most productive series during the final, hurry-up 11-on-11 period of practice. He led the offense from its own 27-yard line to the defense’s 33-yard line (playing behind the first-team offensive line and against the first-team defense) before Cameron Van Winkle missed a 51-yard field goal wide left.

K.J. Carta-Samuels’ series lasted just five plays despite a 12-yard first-down completion to Max Richmond on the first snap. Carta-Samuels was sacked on the next play by Psalm Wooching and Joe Mathis, and after a 7-yard completion to Dwayne Washington, the redshirt freshman quarterback threw incomplete twice to end the series.

(Browning’s series ended on the second play, thanks to Feeney’s interception, which he corralled with one hand.)

--- Dexter Charles was absent while tending to a personal matter (nothing nefarious), so the first-team offensive line looked like this: Coleman Shelton, Jake Eldrenkamp, Siosifa Tufunga, Shane Brostek, Matt James.

--- The first-team defense remained mostly the same, with Sidney Jones and Darren Gardenhire at cornerback, Budda Baker and Brandon Beaver at safety, Travis Feeney, Azeem Victor, Keishawn Bierria and Cory Littleton at linebacker, and Elijah Qualls, Joe Mathis and Taniela Tupou along the defensive line – though that position group shuffles personnel among the first-team more frequently than any other.

--- There were a few players who attended but did not participate: defensive backs Jojo McIntosh, Kevin King and Ezekiel Turner, tailback Jomon Dotson and linebacker Connor O’Brien.

Oh, and this happened:

The Huskies return to the practice field for a 10:30 a.m. workout tomorrow.
