Day 12: Notes and observations from Huskies’ final open practice

The Huskies wore helmets and shoulder pads for their Thursday practice, which was also the final practice this season that was open to reporters. So, in all their glory, here are the last batch of practice observations we’ll have for you until spring.

--- Jeff Lindquist threw a rare interception during an early 11-on-11 period, when his pass attempt was deflected and then corralled by defensive lineman Joe Mathis.

--- Sidney Jones later intercepted a pass by quarterback Tony Rodriguez during a 1-on-1 drill. Marvin Hall ran past Jones and seemed to be pretty open, but Rodriguez underthrew the pass and Jones made a nice play to pick it off.

--- And with the offense backed up against its own goal line later in practice, Budda Baker showed off his closing speed by sprinting across the field to pick off a long pass thrown by Jake Browning for Chico McClatcher up the left sideline.

--- The Huskies continue to sort things out on their new-look offensive line. Redshirt freshman Kaleb McGary took some snaps with the No. 1 offense at right tackle, as did redshirt freshman Matt James. Coleman Shelton was at left tackle, with Jake Eldrenkamp at left guard, Siosifa Tufunga at center and Shane Brostek at right guard.

--- True freshman Trey Adams continues to take reps at left tackle with the second-team offensive line, with Dane Crane at left guard, Michael Kneip at center, Jesse Sosebee at right guard and James at right tackle.

--- The first-team defense remains pretty much the same, though Brian Clay slid in at strong safety alongside Budda Baker. Sidney Jones and Darren Gardenhire continue to work as the first-team corners, with Travis Feeney, Azeem Victor, Keishawn Bierria and Cory Littleton at linebacker, and Elijah Qualls, Joe Mathis and Taniela Tupou up front.

--- The final 11-on-11 period at the end of practice consisted of only two series today instead of the customary three. First, Browning guided the offense to a couple first downs before a fourth-down completion to Darrell Daniels was blown dead just before he could get to the first-down marker. Daniels technically carried the ball past the sticks, but Baker had him squarely lined up for what would have been a crushing hit if this had been a full-contact practice, so Daniels was properly ruled down just short.

--- K.J. Carta-Samuels couldn’t move the chains in his series. He threw incomplete deep, then threw incomplete on third down (freshman defensive back Jordan Miller made a nice play to break it up) before Psalm Wooching sacked him on fourth down to end practice.

--- Middle linebacker Azeem Victor had a big hit on tailback Lavon Coleman in the end zone during an 11-on-11 drill.

--- Safeties Jojo McIntosh and Ezekiel Turner remain sidelined by injuries, though both defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake and Chris Petersen said each should be fine and shouldn’t miss much more time.

--- Redshirt freshman defensive back Brandon Lewis saw some time with the No. 1 defense in the nickel package.
