Boise State names a starting QB, Steve Sarkisian apologizes for poor behavior, other notes around Pac-12

Ryan Finley will be the first quarterback the Washington Huskies face this season.

Boise State coach Bryan Harsin announced Sunday morning that Finley, a third-year sophomore who appeared in four games last season, will start at quarterback for the Broncos when they begin the season Sept. 4 against the Huskies in Boise.

Finley, of course, has been the presumed replacement for Grant Hedrick since last season ended -- he took all of the reps with Boise State’s No. 1 offense in the team’s most recent scrimmage -- so the announcement is more of a formality than anything.

Finley played sparingly behind Hedrick last season, completing 12 of 27 passes for 161 yards, two touchdowns and an interception -- and all but two of those pass attempts came in Boise State’s 28-14 loss at Air Force. (He was also arrested in April and charged with a pair of misdemeanors.)

--- In other news not directly related to UW but certainly of interest to Husky fans: USC coach Steve Sarkisian had to apologize on Sunday morning after reportedly behaving poorly at USC’s “Salute to Troy” fan/booster event on Saturday night. Sarkisian was apparently inebriated, used foul language and made disparaging remarks about several Pac-12 opponents.

His apology: "I sincerely apologize to my players and staff and to our fans for my behavior and my inappropriate language at our kickoff event Saturday night. I have a responsibility to all of them and I let them down. Pat Haden talked to me after the event about my actions and I assured him this will not happen again."

--- Ohio State was a unanimous selection as the AP top 25 preseason No. 1. Six Pac-12 teams are included -- No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 USC, No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 21 Stanford and No. 22 Arizona.

--- UW Dawg Pound discusses the Huskies’ kicking game.

Also, a quick note that I won’t be at UW’s media availability this afternoon, because I’m filling in at the Mariners game today.
