Washington’s starting quarterback battle remains unresolved, coach Chris Petersen said Tuesday.
That’s not particularly surprising. Petersen has said before that the quarterback competition could go late into camp, but with UW’s Sept. 4 opener at Boise State looming next weekend, a decision is going to have to be made at some point.
“I would love to have that question not asked, but we’re not there yet. We’re getting closer,” Petersen said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be one of those things – ‘hey, this is the guy, away we go, it’s all settled forever.’ We obviously are going to have a starting quarterback Game 1, but we’re not there. We’re getting closer. These kids have all gotten a lot of reps, and I think we’re kind of still formulating our plan, and we’ve got a few more days to figure that out.”
So, when does he want to make the announcement?
“We’ll make it early enough for all those guys, but they’re all preparing to be the starter, and it could be Play 2, where one guy started and something happens,” Petersen said. “So that mentality can never change. It’s such a long season, and I really mean that for all of our guys. Everybody wants to focus on this position, but we’re going to have true freshmen playing. We did last year. So they might not be starting right away.
“I remember way back when, we were playing Georgia way back when, and we were debating whether we were going to play this DB or not, and we’ll just kind of see how the game goes, if we can get through it. And the opening kickoff, the starter goes down. Well, that made that decision pretty easy, so it’s just such a long season, so many guys have to be ready to go.”
Is he still considering the possibility of playing multiple quarterbacks in the opener?
“I think everybody wants to have one guy that’s the guy,” Petersen said. “Are we there? We’re not there. We might be in a few days, and we might be in a couple months. So this is always going to be kind of – and again, it’s not something I want, because I know it’s going to be such a hot topic with you guys, like what about the quarterback, what about the quarterback, that we’ve always got to talk about – but it is what it is. We just got to take it day by day and week by week.”
