Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour: July 24-27, 2014

This week: RBC Canadian Open, Thursday through Sunday, Royal Montreal Golf Club Blue Course, Ile Bizard, Quebec.

In the field: University Place’s Michael Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.

World rankings: Putnam is 180th, and Stanley is 237th.

2013-14 earnings: Putnam has $544,711 (131st on the PGA Tour), and Stanley has $287,693 (161st on the PGA Tour).

The skinny: Putnam took two well-deserved weeks off after his best stretch of golf this season, ending with a tied-for-35th effort at the Greenbrier Classic (4-under-par 276) on July 6. He also tied for 11th at the Travelers Championship and tied for 24th at the Quicken Loans National. He totaled more than $200,000 in those three tournaments to set his career best in season earnings (his previous best was $422,359 in 2007). His only other appearance at the Canadian Open was in 2007, when he tied for 34th at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario. … Stanley tied for 63rd at the John Deere Classic (5-under 279) on July 13. After eight consecutive tournaments in which he finished over par — three of them were missed cuts — the Bellarmine Prep graduate has been under par in his past two events. He remains last on the PGA Tour in strokes gained in putting (minus-1.53 strokes per round) and three-putt avoidance (more than 5 percent of the time), and he has not gained strokes in putting in any tournament this season.

Tee times Thursday: Stanley at 4:40 a.m. (PDT) and Putnam at 9:35 a.m. Both go off the 10th tee.
