This week: RBC Heritage Classic, Thursday through Sunday, Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In the field: Olympia’s Andres Gonzales and University Place’s Michael Putnam.
First-round scores: Gonzales shot a 1-under-par 70, and Putnam had a 2-over 73.
Positions: Gonzales is tied for 21st, and Putnam is tied for 79th — both trailing co-leaders Matt Every and Graeme McDowell (5-under 66).
Recap: Gonzales has been a good starter for much of the season. He shot a round of par or better for the 11th time in 14 tournaments Thursday — on a windy day when just 36 golfers shot par or better. Gonzales nearly recorded an ace, too, at the 14th hole, hitting a 7-iron tee shot to 2 inches from the cup for an easy birdie. He also sank a 6-foot putt at No. 16 for another birdie to reach 2 under. He later bogeyed the finishing hole into the wind. Afterward, Gonzales said his driving off the tee was the key to his round. … The good news for Putnam is that he made 14 pars. The bad news is that he did not find a lot of birdies. In fact, he made just one — on a 3-foot putt at the sixth hole.
Tee times Friday: Putnam at 5:30 a.m. (PDT) off the first tee and Gonzales at 10:10 a.m. off the 10th tee.
