FRANKLIN PIERCE 28, RIVER RIDGE 27
Set: Trips right.
Down and distance: First-and-10 at the River Ridge 36.
Time remaining: 5 seconds in the fourth quarter.
Score at the time: River Ridge, 27-21.
What happened: Franklin Pierce coach Mickey Ahrens gives his three-year starting quarterback, Willie Patterson, the freedom to trust in his reads. But the clear choice for the final play would be to throw it to the tallest receiver in the end zone. In this case, it was Mason Starling, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound junior. Patterson first looked right toward Alex Bing, but then turned back to his left before lofting a pass high enough into the end zone to give Starling the chance to run underneath it. Starling caught it, and tied the game at 27-27 with zero seconds remaining. Cameron Bowdish kicked a 34-yard extra point after a River Ridge penalty and two penalties on Franklin Pierce, including one for spiking the ball and one for the Cardinals, Ahrens included, running out onto the field in celebration. “I tell my guys to stay on the sideline after a score, but there’s not much I can say when I’m one of the ones running onto the field,” Ahrens said.
