VOLLEYBALL

Top performer: Kasey Woodruff, Curtis

27 digs, 6 aces in 3-2 win over Bellarmine Prep

Curtis 3, Bellarmine Prep 2: It was a battle worthy of 4A SPSL stalwarts.

But in a back-and-forth tussle, it was the Vikings taking the fifth and final set to stay undefeated and escape with a 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11 victory against the Lions.

Western Washington commit Kasey Woodruff wouldn’t let much hit the hardwood as the libero finished with 27 digs and six aces. Haley Morton had 45 assists and Kayla Skipworth had a team-high 15 kills.

The win means Curtis (6-0; 1-0 4A SPSL) is still the lone undefeated team in the 4A SPSL after going 5-0 in nonleague play.

Bellarmine’s tough schedule has plagued it so far. The Lions (1-4; 0-1) have lost four consecutive since a season-opening win against Seattle Prep. They tied the match at 2-2 against Curtis following a 25-20 win in the fourth set, but weren’t able to keep the momentum going.

Puyallup 3, Sumner 0: Kaitlin Sugai had 12 kills and Anna Saelens added 27 assists as the Vikings rolled, 25-16, 25-12, 25-17.

Puyallup (6-1; 1-0 4A SPSL) opened 4A SPSL play the same way it ended the season last year with the defending league champs getting off to a solid start before hosting rival Emerald Ridge at 7:15 p.m. Thursday. Puyallup has now won six consecutive matches since opening the season with a 3-0 loss to reigning 4A state champion Auburn Riverside.

Auburn Riverside 3, Kent-Meridian 0: Western Washington commit Calley Heilborn had 11 kills and 16 digs as the Ravens cruised past the Royals, 25-17, 25-11, 25-19.

Her sister, Camden Heilborn, added 11 digs, as did Kate Pestova. Colorado State commit Ciera Zimmerman had six kills, 24 assists and five aces for the top-ranked Ravens (5-0).

Tahoma 3, Enumclaw 0: It was all Bears all night as Patience O’Neal led them with 12 kills in the 25-21, 25-17, 25-7 victory.

Tahoma’s Kennedy Kibby added 32 assists and Sophia Meyers had 14 digs as the Bears won their second consecutive match since a grueling early-season schedule that included losses to defending 4A state champion Auburn Riverside, 4A SPSL champion Puyallup, undefeated Curtis and Emerald Ridge.

Kentwood 3, Auburn Mountainview 0: Haley Kent’s team-high 11 kills helped lift the Conquerors, 25-17, 25-15, 25-7.

Riley Sansaver had 28 assists for Kentwood and Kylee McManns added seven aces. April Talaiga had seven digs for AMV.

Timberline 3, Central Kitsap 1: Thanks to aggressive serving and consistent play, the Blazers were able to defeat the Cougars.

Timberline only dropped the third set against Central Kitsap, winning 25-18, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-15.

Daja Togiola led her team with seven kills, 22 digs and two blocks on the night. Helping out was Kasey Louis with eight kills, seven digs, two aces and seven blocks.

Tumwater 3, W.F. West 0: Gonzaga commit Kennedy Croft had 13 kills and eight digs in the third-ranked T-Birds convincing win, 25-15, 25-15, 25-9.

GIRLS SOCCER

Top Performer: Raisa Pleasants, Thomas Jefferson

Scored 2 goals in 3-2 win over Auburn Mountainview

Thomas Jefferson 3, Auburn Mountainview 2: The Raiders got off to a fast start and relied on strong defense to close the match out and keep its unbeaten streak alive.

Raisa Pleasants was the first and last goal scorer for Thomas Jefferson (4-0-1), striking goals in the 21st minute and in the 41st.

“Our offense started fast, faster than any other game,” Jefferson coach Josh Hauck said. We got into almost a kickball game with them, and our defense had a lot to handle the majority of the game.”

Pleasants’ quick second-half goal put the Raiders up 3-1, but as the second half became more frantic, another Lion goal was scored.

“The effort my team put in was tremendous,” Hauck said. “These two teams were battling. It was anyone's game but I think we finished our opportunities better.”

Haley Still was the other goal scorer for the Raiders, coming off an assist from Daphne Blanco-Ramirez in the 27th minute.

Bonney Lake 6, Lincoln 0: Kaylee Coatney’s hat trick helped lift the Panthers to the shutout win.

Coatney, the reigning 3A Pierce County League MVP, struck first in the sixth minute to get Bonney Lake on the scoreboard. Summer Kober made it 2-0 in the 30th minute before Coatney and Ashley Nall scored back-to-back just before halftime.

Coatney’s third goal came in the 49th minute.

Lincoln goalkeeper Allie Brooks had 14 saves.

Cascade Christian 2, Bellevue Christian 2: The Cougars’ early lead didn’t hold, but they didn’t suffer their first loss of the season, either.

Cascade Christian (8-0-1) led 2-0 off goals from Mindy McCreary in the 14th minute and Kate Jung in the 25th and looked to cruise from there. But Bellevue Christian stormed back behind goals from Julia Greene and Taylor Wall to tie it up in the 1A Nisqually showdown.

Todd Beamer 1, Auburn Riverside 1: The Ravens’ Natalie Lake tied the match in the 29th minute and it stayed that way the rest of the way.

Beamer (4-1-1; 4-0-1 4A NPSL Olympic) still hasn’t’ lost in league play thanks for its defense holding up after the equalizing goal. Asia Castillo gave the Titans a 1-0 lead when she scored in the ninth minute.

Emerald Ridge 4, South Kitsap 0: Karlee Stueckle scored two goals, Mareonna Henderson and Kahilu Hoopii added one each and the Jaguars found their groove just before the end of the first half and out the gates of the second half.

Stueckle put Emerald Ridge on the board in the 38th minute to put the Jags up 1-0 at halftime. The second half? Three goals in the first nine minutes, including Hoopii’s penalty kick in the 45th and Stueckle’s second goal in the 49th.

Emerald Ridge (3-3-1) was coming off a 1-0 loss to Curtis on Thursday.

Yelm 3, Shelton 0: Emily Neshiem scored a goal and assisted on another in the Tornados’ shutout win over the Highclimbers.

Neshiem gave Yelm its commanding lead in the 50th minute, after finding Taylor Nilles for an assist in the 41st minute. Amanda Jameson got the Tornados on the scoreboard in the 36th minute.

The shutout was a split performance between Carley Johnson and My’Kel Jones for Yelm.

Boger’s goals both were unassisted coming in the 21st and the 77th minutes. Gracie Neu scored the other goal in the 44th minute off Laurén Olson’s assist.
