Morris, a University of Washington commit, ended up going 14-for-23 passing for 188 yards and Tre Mason would get 5 receptions for 103 yards. G-K (9-1) advances to face No. 10 Lake Stevens (9-1) in the first round of state at a day and time to be determined next week.
CLASS 2A DISTRICT PLAYOFFS
Black Hills 14, Columbia River 10: Kade Weitzel’s game-winning 25-yard touchown run sends the Wolves to the state playoffs.
It came with 28 seconds remaining as Black Hills heads to state for the third consecutive season.
“We weren’t in full panic mode. We got the ball back with just over a minute to go and with no timeouts,” Black Hills coach Kirk Stevens said. “They didn’t expect the run.’”
With the win, Black Hills will face Selah in the first round.
“This is the first time where we had a season like this, where so many games have come down to a final possession,” Stevens said. “it's been a dramatic season.
“The players trust and believe in each other and it shows. It's a great group to be around and I hope to be around them for a few more weeks.”
Bellarmine Prep 42, Kennedy Catholic 32: Talk about going out swinging.
Both of these young teams had nothing but pride to play for on Friday night with both being the last teams out in their respective leagues to make the district playoffs.
So that meant no defense and gaudy stats. Bellarmine Prep running back Derrion Summers ran 26 times for 270 yards and four touchdowns in the win.
And in a loss, Kennedy Catholic’s freshman quarterback Sam Huard had a record performance. The son of former Puyallup, UW and NFL quarterback Damon Huard completed 36 of 54 passes for 535 yards and five touchdowns.
That’s the fourth-most yards in a single-game in state history behind former Shadle Park QB Brett Rypien (613 yards in 2013, 577 yards in 212) and former Tahoma quarterback Amandre Williams (580 yards, 2014) and the most ever by a freshman in a game. Rypien is now the quarterback at Boise State and Amandre Williams is a linebacker at UW.
The fourth-most yards in a game was previously held by Kentwood quarterback Justin Seiber, who threw for 526 yards earlier this season.
Huard also had some big receivers. Jabez Tinae had nine catches for 278 yards and three touchdowns and Junior Alexander had 16 catches for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
