High school girls soccer: The News Tribune’s 2019 All-Area team

First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2019 All-Area girls soccer team.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Hailey Still, Thomas Jefferson, sr. — UW commit rewrote the record book at Thomas Jefferson, scoring 43 goals and notching 11 assists in her final high school season. She’ll leave the school with records for goals in a season (43), goals in a game (9) and career goals (121).

COACH OF THE YEAR

Matt White, Puyallup — What a 2019 it’s been for White, winning two state titles in the same calendar year. After leading the Puyallup boys’ team to the 4A state title in the spring, he guided the girls to the 4A state championship this fall, compiling an 18-2-2 record capped by a 2-1 win over Auburn Riverside in the championship game.

FIRST TEAM

FORWARDS

Sydney Evans, Puyallup, sr. — The best attacking option on the state’s best team, Evans racked up 22 goals and seven assists, including three goals and three assists in the postseason, and the game-winning goal in the state final.

Alyssa Gray, Gig Harbor, sr. — Last year’s TNT All-Area player of the year and WSU commit had 28 goals and eight assists. Two-time 3A South Sound Conference MVP.

Samiah Shell, Auburn Riverside, fr. — First-team 4A NPSL Olympic forward paced the Ravens with 17 goals and 27 assists, leading them to a 20-2-1 record.

Grace Edvalds, Bellarmine Prep, jr. — Led the Lions to an appearance in the 4A state tournament, and tallied 20 goals and 12 assists this season.

Hallie Bergford, Tumwater, sr. — Two-time 2A Evergreen Conference MVP and Seattle U commit scored 36 goals and had eight assists for the T-Birds.

MIDFIELDERS

Elsa Bley, Puyallup, sr. — Holding mid was the glue between the offense and defense for the 4A state champions. Added four goals and nine assists for the Vikings. Headed to Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.

Torie Reardon, Curtis, jr. — Two-time 4A SPSL first-teamer was a box-to-box midfielder for the Vikings, leading Curtis to the 4A state tournament.

Kaylee Coatney, Bonney Lake, sr. — Utah commit, first-team 3A PCL selection and attacking midfielder scored 32 goals and had 11 assists. Finished with 114 goals and 52 assists in her career.

Monica Brown, Enumclaw, sr. — Hornets’ defensive midfielder was the 4A NPSL Olympic defensive player of the year, guiding the Hornets to an 11-6-3 record.

DEFENDERS

Sydney Wate, Auburn Riverside, sr. — Three-time first-team 4A NPSL Olympic selection helped a defense that only conceded 12 goals through 23 games. Ravens had 14 shutouts this season. Montana State-Billings commit.

Mia Mahaffey, Sumner, sr. — Left back was a defensive presence, but also one of the team’s top goal scorers and a constant threat to get forward in the attack. Led the Spartans to the 4A state quarterfinals.

GOALKEEPER

McAllister Smith, Sumner, sr. — Seattle U commit guided the Spartans to nine shutouts this season.

SECOND TEAM

Forwards: Emma Robbins, White River, sr.; Karli Yoshida-Williams, Mount Rainier, soph.; Lauren Foster, Olympia, sr.

Midfielders: Alec Baumgardt, Federal Way, jr.; Natalie DeGagne, Kennedy Catholic, sr.; Morgan Miles, Rogers, sr; Olivia Seaholm, Stadium, jr.; Marielle Arnold, Central Kitsap, sr.; Callie Lowney, Puyallup, soph.; Meredith Udovich, Puyallup, sr.; Campbell Nests, Tahoma, sr.
