Lincoln QB Filer will walk on at Northern Colorado, eager to prove doubters wrong
One of the state’s most productive quarterbacks is headed to the University of Northern Colorado. Lincoln High School grad Caden Filer announced his commitment to the Big Sky program on Twitter.
Filer, who will walk on with the Bears program, was a first-team selection on the Associated Press 2019 all-state Class 3A football team.
In his senior season, the lefty signal caller, nicknamed “Dimes,” threw for 3,445 yards, 39 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He averaged 265 yards per game through the air.
“I was doing a throwing session,” Filer said. “We’re driving home, this number calls me and it’s (Dave) Baldwin, the offensive coordinator. He said he’s wondering if I’d want to come down and play.”
Filer jumped on the opportunity, committing shortly thereafter. For Filer, the big-time scholarship offers never came, despite his steady productivity during his Lincoln career. Lauded by the Lincoln coaching staff for his tireless work ethic and commitment to his craft, Filer is eager to show schools they missed out.
“I want to go in there and win,” Filer said. “There’s a lot of schools out here, local schools that I would reach out to and they never really responded to me. I want to show them what they’re missing.”
At times, the process of waiting was frustrating for Filer. But he tried to remain positive throughout.
“It’s tough but you just have to keep your head down and keep grinding,” he said. “At some point, something is going to come through. The people that fall off are the ones that miss their opportunities. I just kept my head down and waited for an opportunity.”
Filer said he had positive conversations with the Northern Colorado coaching staff.
“They liked how the ball came out of my hand, my read progressions,” he said. “I’m ready. I’m ready to show them what I’ve got and prove to everybody that I’m the real deal.”
