Walla Walla coach Chris Ferenz was walking toward the locker room relieved when two Walla Walla fans in the stands stopped him to say congratulations.
“You guys get to stay another day,” Ferenz replied.
But just barely. Senior Madi Doepker hit four clutch free throws late to ward off a surging Bothell, which pulled within two on a deep 3-pointer by sophomore Taya Corosdale with eight seconds to go. Walla Walla prevailed, 49-45, in a girls 4A loser-out game Friday at the Tacoma Dome.
The Blue Devils had trouble from the field most of the afternoon, shooting 27.7 percent, including a five-and-a-half minute field goal drought in the first half. Senior Madelyn Sirmon led with 14 points, eight rebounds. Senior Mikayla Ferenz and Doepker each added 13 – 11 of Doepker’s points came from free throws. The Cougars shot significantly better at 39.1 percent, but committed 18 fouls – Walla Walla was 18-for-22 from the stripe.
