De’Jounte Murray and Matisse Thybulle will be teammates at the University of Washington next year, but Friday night at the Tacoma Dome they were mortal enemies.
Murray posted a double-double as his Rainier Beach Vikings defeated Thybulle’s Eastside Catholic Crusaders in the 3A state semifinals, 61-33. Rainier Beach faces Garfield in the championship game Saturday at 5 p.m.
Murray scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Thybulle finished with 11 points for Eastside Catholic.
Rainier Beach (25-3) had trouble early with Eastside Catholic’s zone defense. But once point guard Ivy Smith started to penetrate the zone, things opened up for the Vikings.

“The coaches told us we’ve got to spread out, we’ve got to swing the ball a little faster,” said Smith, a senior who transferred from Wilson High School after his junior year. “We started to open up more, and get around our man and find the open man and get the easy bucket.”
Smith had six points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Rainier Beach jumped out to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter, but scored only four points in the second quarter before solving the zone in the second half.
Eastside Catholic (24-7) scored the first six points of the third quarter and trailed 26-23 before Rainier Beach started to flow on offense.
Rainier Beach put the game away with a 12-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter. Guard Shadeed Shabazz had six points during that stretch and finished with 12.
