Puyallup baseball shut down in 6-0 quarterfinal loss to Huntington Beach

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CALIFORNIA) 6, PUYALLUP 0

Quarterfinals in Cary, North Carolina

Batting: Puyallup: Riley Pletcher 1-3, 3B; Zach Needham 1-3; Ryan Teague 1-3. Huntington Beach: Daniel Amaral 1-2, 2 R, RBI, SB; Chad Miinato 1-1, 3 R, RBI; Cooper Moore 2-3, RBI; Logan Pouelsen 1-2, RBI.

The skinny: The first batter of the game, Puyallup’s Riley Pletcher, hit a triple. But UCLA commit Hagen Danner struck out the next three batters — he finished with 13 strikeouts in seven innings — and the Vikings never seriously threatened after that as they were sent to the consolation bracket. Huntington Beach’s Daniel Amaral, another UCLA commit and the son of former Seattle Mariners utility player Rich Amaral, drove in the first of two runs in the third inning and scored the first of three runs in the fourth.

Up next: Puyallup vs. Loyalsock (Pennsylvania), 6 a.m. (PDT) in second round of consolation at USA Baseball’s National Training Complex Field 3.
