Skyline’s Abby Haapala no-hits Graham-Kapowsin in 4A softball championship

Graham-Kapowsin’s magical season falls one game short of the ultimate prize.

Skyline senior Abby Haapala threw a no-hitter on the state’s biggest stage and the Spartans knocked off No. 1 Graham-Kapowsin, 7-0, in the 4A championship game at the Columbia Playfields in Richland on Saturday.

Haapala walked two and fanned 14, defusing an Eagles offense among the state’s best. The Santa Clara commit struck out the side in order in the first and sixth innings, retiring 18 of her first 19 batters faced.

Graham-Kapowsin (27-2) returns home with the second-place trophy, improving on a third-place finish in 2025.

The Eagles lost twice to Skyline this spring and beat everyone else, capturing league and district titles as the headliner of a daunting 4A SPSL. Graham-Kapowsin sophomore Brooklyn Pettit rose to stardom, posting a 24-1 record and 0.71 ERA with a state-best 312 strikeouts this spring.

“It’s a team game… but with (Brooklyn) there, it exudes confidence for the rest of the team,” Graham-Kapowsin head coach Jamie Thomas told The News Tribune earlier this month. “We can make a mistake if we have to, and we’re getting picked up by the pitching.”

Skyline sophomore Elin Aageson belted a go-ahead, solo home run in the second inning, enough to carry the Spartans to the finish line behind Haapala’s gem. The designated hitter reached in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a walk, homer, and two RBI.

Spartans right fielder Devyn Wilson went 3-for-4, padding an early lead with an RBI single in the second inning.

Junior shortstop Piper Swanson delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning. Shea Staley and Aageson added RBI singles in the sixth, and Sophia Thelen provided insurance with an RBI single in the seventh.

Graham-Kapowsin is primed for another deep tournament run in 2027, projected to return Pettit alongside sluggers Lehua Siaki and Manamea Laban.
