Wrestling roundup: Peninsula’s Chance Stolz pins way to second league title in a row

There’s apparently not much Chance Stolz can’t do.

The Peninsula High School senior continued his unbeaten streak against residents of the United States this year, pinning Auburn Mountainview’s Muqtar Barfield in the first round in Saturday’s 195-pound finals of the Class 3A South Puget Sound League sub-regional wrestling tournament at Bonney Lake High School.

More accomplishments: Stolz is 33-1 this year — with his lone loss coming in a 5-2 decision against Tatsuya Fujii of the Japanese junior national team — has gone undefeated in league matches the past two seasons and was a first-team all-league linebacker on the football team.

To top it off, he received a scholarship offer from Grand Canyon University in Arizona to play rugby. And he’s never even played.

“It was funny because I’ve never even touched a rugby ball in my life … I don’t think,” Stolz said.

He repeated as a sub-regional champion, securing a place in next week’s regional tournament at North Thurston.

“I’m on top of my game,” said Stolz, who took third in last year’s 3A state 195-pound championships. “I’m at that point in the season where I feel I’m peaking.

“Every match has to be your best match from here on out because it’s going to get harder and harder. But I don’t think there’s any reason why I wouldn’t be able to accomplish my goal (of a state title). Just got to stay on top of my game.”

Auburn won the team title, sending Enumclaw to second place for the second consecutive year.

Not that Enumclaw coach Adam Eilers was too worried. Not after last year, when Enumclaw went on to win the regional tournament and then the state championship.

“I was just joking with the Auburn coach (Dennis Herren), ‘That’s fine — you can take it this week. We’ll come back and get the next two and I’ll be happy about that,’ ” Eilers said.

Enumclaw’s most impressive win was in the 182 finals. Kione Gill improved to 27-1 with a win against Sumner’s Josiah Schliesman.

Bonney Lake took third behind Avery Meyer in the 145 finals. He pinned Auburn Mountainview’s Dylan Foley in the second round when just seconds earlier it was tied at 4-4.

Meyer got a reversal and immediately locked Foley for the pin to improve to 32-4. Bonney Lake got another win from Brandon Kaylor at 106 to improve to 32-2.

The top four wrestlers from each weight class advanced to next week’s 3A regional tournament.

TAHOMA WINS AGAIN

Tahoma won the Class 4A SPSL sub-regional tournament for the eighth consecutive year with 338 points to second-place Decatur’s 311.

That was after the Decatur coach Mike Bressler was recognized as he plans to retire at the season’s end following 18 years as the Golden Gators’ coach.

Tahoma’s Nick Whitehead won the 126-pound finals with a 6-2 decision against Kent-Meridian’s Gerardo Suarez to improve to 33-7.

Decatur’s Leviticus Arizpe won the 132 finals against Tahoma’s Ryden Fu to improve to 35-2 this year.

Some of the league’s unbeaten wrestlers are still unbeaten: Kent-Meridian’ Emmanuel Daigbe is now 25-0 after taking the 195 finals. Todd Beamer’s Mitchell Owens, who has missed half the season with an injury, won the 182 finals and is now 14-0. And Federal Way’s Andrzej Hughes-Murray, who this week signed his letter of intent to play football at Oregon State University, is 34-0 following his victory in the 220 finals.

CURTIS CLINCHES SOUTH

Evan Janson (106), Devin Neal (138), Alex Stuart (170), Jon Bridgman (182) and Calhoun Helmberger (220) won titles at the 4A SPSL South sub-regional to lift Curtis past second-place Bethel, 382-304.5.

Maybe the most impressive title came at 160, where Bethel’s Phillip Springsteen defeated Rogers’ Ty Wilson, the defending Class 4A state 152-pound champion, 15-8.

His brother, Dante Springsteen, took the 152-pound title Saturday, pinning Curtis’ Ketner Fields.

YELM WINS 4TH IN A ROW

The Tornados won the 4A Narrows League sub-regional by a half-point over South Kitsap, 372-371.5.

Yelm won the title for the fourth consecutive season in the last year of the Narrows League’s existence.

Holden Miller scored all six of his points in the final period of the 285 finals to knock off Bellarmine Prep’s Luke Yi. Yelm is slated to join a still nameless 3A league next year.

“It’s a nice way to finish the Narrows League, isn’t it, at 4A?” Yelm coach Gaylord Strand said. “Four-year streak, and then go down to 3A.”

LINCOLN TAKES 3A NARROWS

Chris Jackson (106), Kobe Khong (120), Jeramias Sandoval (126), Elijah Duncombe (132), Marcus Wiley (152) and Will Wilsey (220) won titles for Lincoln as it cruised past second-place Shelton, 399-265, to win the Class 3A Narrows crown.

That gives Lincoln Narrows titles in boys wrestling, boys basketball and girls basketball this year.

Foss’ Jackson Potts won the 285-pound title with a pin in 3 minutes, 17 secodns against Capital’s Angus Beaton.

ORTING CRUISES

Ben Gore got a pin in the 145 finals and was one of five Orting wrestlers to win titles in the Class 2A SPSL sub-regional tournament as the Cardinals beat second-place Washington, 353.5-235.

ROGERS GIRLS THREE-PEAT

Puyallup’s Jordyn Bartelson and Brooklyn Bartelson each pinned their way to West Central District sub-regional titles as both advanced to next week’s regional tournament.

But Rogers left with the team title for the third consecutive year, beating second-place Fife, 191.5-160.

Jordyn Bartelson, who this week signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Western Washington University next year, is now one step away from returning to the Tacoma Dome, where she will vie to win her fourth state wrestling championship.

Rogers’ Mariya Gaither took the 140-pound title as the Rams’ lone title winner.
