1A Nisqually/others preview: Primer, predictions, team capsules

Cascade Christian’s steady coaching and veteran players in their deep system will help them earn a leg up on the rest of the league.

Charles Wright hired Brian Burdick in the offseason to replace Mike Finch, who is now the athletic director at Annie Wright.

Vashon’s Bryce Hoisington set a state single-season rushing record with 2,929 yards. He ran for 573 yards in the Pirates’ season finale.

Cascade Christian (8-2 last year), Vashon Island (4-6), Port Townsend (10-1), Bellevue Christian (4-6), Charles Wright (3-7), Klahowya (6-3), Chimacum (2-7), Coupeville (1-7).

Oct. 8: Vashon Island at Cascade Christian, 7 p.m., at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Coach: Randy Davis, 13th year.

2015 record: 8-2, first in 1A Nisqually, lost in first round of 1A state playoffs.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Brian Flattum (multiple). Returning starters – 5. Top players — RB Zack Bartolome, 5-10, 175, sr.; TE Tanner Carle, 6-0, 200, jr.; WR Austin Carder, 6-2, sr.; OL Corbin Nohr, 6-2, 150, sr.; OL Abel Nutu, 5-10, 215, jr.; RB Madden Tobeck, 6-0, 180, jr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Axel Johnson (3-3 stack). Returning starters – 6. Top players – LB Bartolome; LB Carle; DB Carder; DB Tyquan Coleman, 6-0, 170, jr.; DL Nohr; LB Tobeck.

Outlook: The Cougars are coming into the season with plenty of experience, but youth in crucial spots. Freshman Parker Johnson will step into a starting quarterback role but is already making strides in running the offense. Depth could become an issue in a deep playoff run, because the numbers are down, which could pose a problem if injuries pile up.

Coach: Brian Burdick, first year.

2015 record: 3-7, second in 1A Nisqually, lost in 1A district playoffs.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Steve Levenseller (multiple). Returning starters – 7. Top players – TE/DL Cooper Cochran, 6-5, 210, sr.; OL Connor Currier, 6-0, 235, sr.; OL Riley Grider, 5-7, 195, sr.; QB Henry Lenaburg, 6-4, 195, jr.; WR Alex Meadowcroft, 5-9, 165, jr.; OL Evan Minsk, 5-11, 200, sr.; RB/LB Blake Stoltenberg, 5-9, 185, sr.; RB James Vogelgesang, 5-9, 170, sr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Burdick (5-2). Returning starters – 9. Top players – LB Stoltenberg; LB Michael Tucci, 5-10, 175, jr.; LB Noah Fields, 5-11, 180, jr.; DB Meadowcroft; DB Ethan Mayer, 5-9, 195, sr.; DL Grider; DL Currier.

Outlook: There are returning starters on both sides of the ball, but they’re learning new sets of plays and schemes. A key to success, said Burdick, is consistency. Coaches say they’re excited by the offensive possibilities.

Coach: Clay Eastly, first year.

2015 record: 4-6, fourth in 1A Nisqually.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Eastly (multiple). Returning starters – 3. Top players – WR Carlos Hernandez WR/K, 6-3, 195, jr.; RB Bryce Hoisington, 5-8, 175, sr.; QB Connor Hoisington, 5-11, 170, jr.; OL Cody Whitman, 6-1, 270, jr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – none (6-2-3). Returning starters – 2. Top players – DB Sol Dehnert, 5-11, 150, sr.; DE Hernandez; LB C. Hoisington; DL Carson Nye, 6-0, 220, sr; DL Whitman.

Outlook: Clay Eastly returns to coach after a three-year absence. He’s gotten a late start, only connecting with the players at the first practice. He’s dedicated to passing more to take some of the load off Bryce Hoisington, who set a state record with 2,929 yards rushing as a junior. Eastly’s goal is to work out the kinks in the nonleague games and have the Pirates clicking once league play begins.

League: 2B Pacific Mountain.

Coach: Ty Satiacum, first year.

2015 record: 0-9, ninth in 2B Pacific.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Tutaumua Tamaalevea (pistol/flat spread). Returning starters – 9. Top players – QB Kahea Baker, 6-0, 200, soph.; WR Kuliano Baker, 6-1, 180, sr.; FB Anthony Brazelle, 5-9, 175, sr.; OL Alexander Cordova, 6-2, 250, sr.; WR Joey Gacek, 6-0, 175, jr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Marqise Henry (4-3). Returning starters – 9. Top players – LB Ka. Baker; LB Ku. Baker; LB Brazelle; DL Cordova; DB Gacek.

Outlook: New coach said his goal is to build a team and establish a football culture, which should get more players into the program. Warriors will run a simplified version of their offense.

League: 1B Sea-Tac.

Coach: Allen Ash, first year.

2015 record: 8-1, first in 1B Sea-Tac, lost in first round of 1B state playoffs.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Chris Denney (multiple). Returning starters – 4. Top players – C Jonah Bond, 5-11, 300, sr.; FB Ryan Circelli, 5-10, 210, sr.; QB/WR Blake Golden, 5-10, 160, sr.; RB/QB Ryan Lorette, 5-11, 165, sr.; WR Brian Rittierodt, fr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Ash (4-4, varies from there). Returning starters – 4. Top players – DB Golden; LB/DB Lorette; LB Tircelli, LB Josiah Heimlich, jr.

Outlook: With the graduation of 10 seniors, players that had smaller roles are now counted on to do more. The Eagles are awaiting on returning senior quarterback Josiah Heimlich to recover from an injury that has kept him off the field during the offseason. Because they lack size and numbers, the Eagles will rely on speed.

League: 2B Pacific Mountain.

Coach: Jess Nelson, third year.

2015 record: 7-3, third in 2B Pacific, lost in first round of 2B state playoffs.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Dan Coen (pistol). Returning starters – 4. Top players – OL Parker Griffith, 5-10, 210, sr.; QB Mike McKay, 5-9, 175, sr.; OL Ezra Miller, 6-1, 175, jr.; WR Will VanderFeltz, 6-3, 165, sr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Nelson (3-5). Returning starters – 5. Top players – DL Griffith; LB/DE Miller; DB McKay; DB VanderFeltz; LB Stephen Woomer, 5-9, 170, sr.

Outlook: Big changes are in store for the Eagles. On offense, senior Mike McKay is moving from receiver to quarterback. On defense, the Eagles must replace four graduated linebackers and adjust to a new scheme. Coach Jess Nelson likes the progress made, but time will tell.

League: 1B Sea-Tac

Coach: Tim Rasmussen, third year.

2015 record: 2-7, seventh in 2B Pacific.

Offense: Coordinator (set) – Rasmussen (multiple). Returning starters – 8. Top players – OL Noah Leaman, 5-11, 205, sr.; WR/RB Dustin Lirazan, 5-8, 165, sr.; TE Doug Stone, 5-8, 170, sr.; QB P.J. Talen, 6-2, 180, jr.

Defense: Coordinator (set) – Steve Stone (3-4). Returning starters – 8. Top players – LB Logan Kitselman, 6-1, 190, soph.; DL Leaman.

Outlook: The Crusaders have moved to a 1B eight-man league after playing in the 2B Pacific last season. Experienced players — all the offensive and defensive starters return — is a big plus. Coach Tim Rasmussen said experience and the new league will allow him to open up the offense.
