Even in a year when he didn’t throw a pitch at the big-league level, lefty reliever Charlie Furbush made an impact in the Seattle community.
Furbush, 30, will receive the Moose Clausen Community Service Award on Nov. 19 from the Mariners RBI Club, which is an organization of season ticket-holders who are active in the community.
The organization cited Furbush’s involvement over the last three years as co-chairman of the Annual Mariners Care Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament, which raised $615,000 over that span.
Among other activities, Furbush has also been active in the Toys for Kids program and a participant in holiday gift distributions at hospitals in the Greater Seattle area.

Where Furbush hasn’t been active is on the mound.
Once one of the game’s better match-up relievers, he hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since July 7, 2015. After a series of failed non-surgical rehab efforts, he underwent an operation in August to repair a torn rotator cuff.
Plans call call for Furbush to spend all of next season undergoing rehab procedures in hopes of returning to active duty by spring training in 2018.
That lengthy rehab schedule recently prompted the Mariners to remove Furbush from their 40-man roster by sending him through waivers. When no other team claimed him, the Mariners sent him to Triple-A Tacoma on an outright assignment.
Furbush chose to reject the assignment and become a free agent.
Oddly, perhaps, Furbush is the third Clausen Award recipient in the last four years who will not be with the club over the ensuing off-season.
Manager Eric Wedge, along with his wife Kate, received the 2013 award after being fired; and outfielder Michael Saunders was traded to Toronto shortly after receiving the 2014 award.
Mariners Hall of Famer Alvin Davis was the 2015 recipient.
The award is named for Al "Moose" Clausen, who joined the Mariners’ front office as director of sales in 1982. He remained with the club until his retirement in 2012.
