The Mariners released catcher Steven Baron on Wednesday after eight seasons in the organization.

The move came one week after Baron, 25, was designated for assignment in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for left-handed reliever Ryan Weber, whom the Mariners acquired in a waiver claim from Atlanta.

The Mariners selected Baron with the 33rd overall pick in the 2009 draft, but he played in just four big-league games — going hitless in 11 at-bats in September 2015.

Baron spent most of this season at Double-A Jackson, where he batted a career-high .280 in 66 games. He batted .234 overall in eight minor-league seasons with 26 homers and 228 RBIs in 554 games.
