This just in: the veterans committee has elected Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey to the Hall of Fame.
Herzog was a manager and - briefly general manager and established himself as both a winner and a classic baseball character. Harvey was considered as good as umpiring got.
The 16-man veterans committee considered more than a dozen candidates but elected only two.
One of those voting was former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda.
"Whitey dedicated his life to this game, as a player, a farm director, a manager, a general manager, and he was good at all those roles," Lasorda said. "He's a friend, and last year he missed by one vote. "
Which managers now active would Lasorda consider potential Hall of Famers?
"It's a tough, small fraternity," Lasorda said. "Bobby Cox is a shoe-in - he's all class. I think Tony LaRussa, Joe Torre, they're great manaers. I like Mike Scioscia."
