Peter Gammons, who pioneered the Sunday notes column as a sportswriter - then conquered the airwaves with his reporting on ESPN - has announced he will leave the network at the conclusion of the winter meetings.
Gammons said the departure came without animosity or prejudice. After 20 years on the air, he simply wanted to move on to other endeavors.
Gammons has been a recognizeable figure for decades at these meetings and elsewhere - standing face-to-face with baseball executives, notebook in hand. He's long been a member of the writers branch of baseball's Hall of Fame.
It would be easy to say he'll be missed, but for those of us who have worked alongside him in press boxes and media rooms, in clubhouses and ball parks around the country, Gammons isn't leaving.
