Ryan Garko was claimed off waivers today by the Texas Rangers.
The right-handed hitting first baseman, signed just before spring training by the Mariners, was once considered half of a Garko-Casey Kotchman platoon, but that disappeared as camp played out.
Garko will join the Rangers in the next few days and his roster spot will go to the one non-roster invitee to make the opening night roster, Mike Sweeney.
In 15 spring games, Garko batted .220 with one home run and four RBI. The Rangers will pick up all of Garko's $550,000 salary.
