The Mariners have played four consecutive one-run games and gone 1-3, and the last time they played five in a row was back in 2004.
Whatever the score tonight, they'll be without Mike Sweeney again, and yes, it's because of that 'tweaked' back.
"We're going to see a couple of left-handed starters from Toronto later this week, so if we give Mike a little bit of a break he should be fine," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "He'd play with a broken bone, but he had back issues last year and we don't want to get to that point this season."
Without Sweeney, the Mariners will use Ken Griffey Jr. as the designated hitter and, against lefty Gio Gonzalez tonight, try right-handed hitting Matt Tuiasosopo in left field and Josh Bard behind the plate.
Ryan Langerhans and Rob Johnson are both better today the Sunday, but neither is ready to play unless there's no other choice. Since there is, this is Wak's lineup:
- Ichiro Suzuki, RF
- Chone Figgins, 2B
- Franklin Gutierrez, CF
- Jose Lopez, 3B
- Ken Griffey Jr., DH
- Matt Tuiasosopo, LF
- Casey Kotchman, 1B
- Josh Wilson, SS
- Josh Bard, C
- Ryan Rowland-Smith, P
