Mike Sweeney told the News Tribune yesterday that within 48 hours, he would be either be back in Seattle with the Mariners, back in San Diego with his family or on another team.
Well it's the last option.
The Mariners have traded Sweeney to the Philadelphia Phillies for cash considerations.
Sweeney came to the Mariners before the 2009 season as a non-roster invitee. He made the team more for his leadership than his bat, providing a good example for a team filled with young players in search of the proper way to the play the game.
Surprisingly, he was invited back to the Mariners this spring and people were stunned when he made the team out of spring training after hitting close to .500.
This season, he played in 30 games, hitting .263 (26-for-99) with six homers and 18 RBI. However his chronic back issues sidelined him on several different occasions.
He recently was on the disabled list with a back problem for the last few weeks.
