After throwing three consecutive complete-game victories against the New York Yankees, Felix Hernandez had a 6-0 shutout through eight innings tonight - and was pulled.
Daren Brown being too conservative? Not according to Felix.
"I threw too many pitches, I knew I was done after eight," he said. "I had 117 pitches. I knew in the seventh inning I wasn't going to go nine."
In a lost season - the Seattle Mariners have won seven of their last 10 games and are still 49-73 - Hernandez is not about to be abused by a manager, whether that was Don Wakamatsu or Brown. If this franchise has a future, Felix is a huge part of it.
With about six weeks left in the season, Hernandez has already thrown 197 innings.
"If he'd had about 100 pitches after eight, I'd have sent him out again," Brown said. "But with 117? You figure 12-15 pitches for an inning, and that's just too many at this point in the season."
