Pretty light minor league report with both Jackson and High Desert having off days.
I was at Cheney Stadium again yesterday and the Rainiers exploded for 15 runs in a win over Nashville. Mike Carp hit a grand slam off the scoreboard in right-center and drove in five runs in the game. Alex Liddi had an RBI double, a two-run double and an run-scoring single.
Dustin Ackley had a double and a triple and two walks, while scoring four runs. One of the walks was typical Ackley, he ripped three balls foul -- all hard line drives. Down 1-2 in the count, he didn't chase any offspeed stuff away and worked a walk on 3-2. The kid gets the strike zone.
All the offense helped Luke French get his first win of the season. French was more like the pitcher the Rainiers had last year that helped them win a PCL title. French worked ahead and used his slider and changeup much more effectively.
The Clinton LumberKings picked up a rare win, beating Cedar Rapids 7-1. A big reason for it as the pitching of James Paxton. The lefty prospect pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out 12 batters and walking two to get his first professional win.
Catcher Steven Baron hit a homer for Clinton.
