Pretty quiet pregame today. As expected, Tom Wilhelmsen will be in the bullpen. With Charlie Furbush starting tomorrow, the Mariners will need a long reliever to be available - that's Wilhelmsen. Manager Eric Wedge talks about it in the video above.
Furbush will be on a pitch count of sorts, though Wedge said they will just kind of see how feels and how he looks out on the mount, pointing to the fact that he had thrown 90 pitches in a recent outing in July.
So why is Furbush getting the start? Well, they want to see what he's like as a starter. But beyond that, what they won't say, is that to call up Anthony Vasquez would have meant using up that last open spot on the 40-man roster. And I think they want to keep that spot open just in case a waiver-wire trade is made or if someone like Wily Mo Pena also needs to be called up.
Wedge also mentions in the video that Michael Pineda's next start won't be till next week. With an offday, the Mariners pushed back his next start to give him some added rest as well as keeping his overall innings low.
Last season, he threw a career-high 139 1/3 innings. This year, he's already thrown 130 innings. Wedge will try and dial back his innings some so he doesn't go too much over. The Mariners have a number of innings, but haven't said what it is.
"We have something in mind, but nothing we want to go public with," Wedge said. "We have an idea where we want him to end up. As important as anything, we want to have him pitch through September. What we don't want to do is have to shut him down early. We want have him pitch through September so he has that recognition and experience so he can work himself into a normal offseason routine."
Pineda will throw flat ground and throw some bullpens on his break.
The rotation slots like this so far ...
LHP Charlie Furbush vs. LHP Gio Gonzalez, Wednesday
LHP Jason Vargas vs. RHP Dan Haren, Friday
RHP Blake Beavan vs. RHP Jered Weaver, Saturday
RHP Felix Hernandez vs. RHP Ervin Santana, SundayCatcher Adam Moore is taking on-field batting practice. He had another MRI today and is waiting for Dr. Edward Khalfayan to review it. If all goes well, he'll start catching bullpens. And then from there he'll progress to catching and blocking drills. He could be sent out on a rehab assignment by mid August.
Chone Figgins is feeling better after straining his hip flexor, but was still planning on meeting with Khalfayan before the game.
