Getting Mariners on base isn't the issue

The Seattle Mariners are a team with middle-of-the-pack pitching in the American League in their first 25 games, and their offense isn't even dead last.

So what's the problem?

Well, in a word, 'scoring.' During the four-game losing streak they bring to tonight's game in Tampa, the Mariners are a stunning 0-for-30 with runners in scoring position - an impossibly impotent stretch.

That's led to five runs - total - if the four losses. Tonight, manager Eric Wedge has come up with another lineup. Among other things, he's dropped Justin Smoak from the cleanup spot.
