The Seattle Mariners are back to their left-handed lineup today, facing Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Chad Billingsley, which means Dustin Ackley is back in the lineup.
The pleasant surprise may be Jesus Montero, the designated hitter a day after taking a 97 mph fastball on his left elbow.
"Montero's tough," manager Eric Wedge said. "He was wearing that pitch but the first thing he said when I got out there was 'I'm going to first base.' Then he tore off - or whatever the definition of him tearing off would be."
Starting in place of Felix Hernandez today is Blake Beavan.
Wedge said the team will know more about Kevin Millwood's abiilty to make his next start on Tuesday, but that Millwood played catch again today - his second in a row - and continiues to get treatment for a strained groin muscle.
Asked about returning Brandon League to the closer's role, Wedge said that would happen 'sooner rather than later' but not today. Working in a variety of roles the past few weeks, League has regained confidence, thrown more strikes, pitched more aggressively and used all of his pitches, Wedge said.
"If Brandon does close, it doesn't mean Tom (Wilhelmsen) or someone else won't get opportunities, too," Wedge said.
As for Franklin Gutierrez, he will accompany the Tacoma Rainiers on a road trip that begins today.
