Just a quick post because the Mariners' second-round draft pick from this year's draft, shortstop Joe DeCarlo is in the process of signing his contract and will be available to the media. So I will get a few comments from him. We met him quickly and that kid doesn't look 18. He looks like a man.
As for news? There isn't a ton of it. Thursday's starter is still "to be announced." It's Kevin Millwood's turn, but Wedge isn't certain whether he will make the start because of the mild groin strain the veteran suffered on Friday.
"We have options," Wedge said.
Millwood felt good today and will throw a flat ground session tomorrow.
Because of Monday's off day, he can move everyone up a day and push Millwood's start back. I guess he could also spot start Iwakuma as well, though Wedge didn't specifically mention that.
"We'll take it day to day," he said. "We've got multiple plans. I've got it all mapped out with Carl. We should be fine."
As for the future of Blake Beaven, he's remaining in the rotation ... for the time being.
"It all starts with his fastball command," Wedge said. "That's what led him to the success he's had up here - throwing the fastball where he wants to, being confident with it and moving it around. I'd still like to see him improve his secondary stuff continue to get better and more consistent, whether it be for a strike or out of the zone with two strikes."
Wedge admitted that Mike Carp's right shoulder, which he injured in Japan, is bothering him. It's one of the reasons why Carp's throws are so weak. He has never had a great arm. But the injury has weakened it.
