Mariners recall Smoak, place Carp on DL

Justin Smoak is back in the majors. And Mike Carp is back on the disabled list.

The Mariners announced the return of Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma this afternoon after a roster spot opened because of Carp's left groin injury. This marks the third trip this season to the DL for Carp, who hurt himself stretching for a throw on Sunday against the Angels.

Smoak had five hits in his last 10 at-bats with the Rainiers, including three doubles and two walks. He is hitting .265 in August with a .444 on-base percentage, and raised his Triple-A average to .242 overall in 66 at-bats. Smoak was optioned to Tacoma on July 23 in the midst of a 1-for-25 stretch that had dropped his average with Seattle to .189. He is still tied for the team lead in home runs (13), and is fourth on the club in RBI (38) in 90 games played.
