Mariners reach out for help - and get Smoak

Yes, Justin Smoak is back, and the Seattle Mariners have him.

With 1B Mike Carp going on the disabled list with a strained muscle, the Mariners brought Smoak up from Tacoma, where he'd batted .242 in 20 games. While Smoak drew 16 walks and had a fine on-base percentage with the Rainiers, he had no home runs and four RBI.

He'll bat sixth tonight, in a lineup that features OF Trayvon Robinson batting second and Kyle Seager at cleanup. One inriguing note: Jesus Montero his 5-for-6 in his career vs. Tampa lefty Matt Moore.

Tonight begins what could  be the do-it-or-move-on portiion of Smoak's future with Mariners. Of course, the same can be said of Eric Thames and Miguel Olivo.
