Report: Mariners to sign lefty Joe Saunders to a one-year contract

Well, today hasn't been dull.

After all the Felix Hernandez hysteria and then the official announcement of the Kelly Shoppach, there comes the latest news that the team will sign free agent lefty Joe Saunders to a one-year contract, pending a physical.

It's not a surprise since the Mariners were looking for veteran left-handed pitching. Saunders certainly fits that criteria. It's a bit of a surprise that it's a one-year deal. Saunders had been asking for a two-year contract and it seemed like he might get it. To get him for one season is a solid acquisition.

Obviously many people are familiar with Saunders, who pitched for the Angels for several years. In nine career starts at Safeco Field, Saunders is 6-0 with a 2.13 ERA. Of course, that was pitching against the Mariners.

Basically, the Mariners replaced Jason Vargas with Saunders. And if you look at the numbers ... they are pretty much the same pitcher.
