Tweeted it this morning that Justin Smoak was being activated from the disabled list and that Alex Liddi was being optioned to Triple A Tacoma. We saw Liddi saying his goodbyes last night postgame. The Mariners made the roster move official about an hour after Smoak arrived in Anaheim from Sacramento where he is with the team.
Smoak is in the line-up batting sixth and playing first base.
Will this be a big boost for the Mariners offensively? Probably not.
Smoak was hitting .240 with three homers and eight RBIs when he went on the disabled list. His on-base percentage is a respectable .350, but his slugging percentage is .344 .
No this was a move based on other issues. We saw last nights some of the issues of playing a dinged up Michael Morse at first. Obviously, Morse is a slightly better defensive first baseman than what he showed last night. But he simply had enough reps there to be consistent. And he's still battling a strained quadriceps muscle that's limited his movement.
Kendrys Morales and sore back have limited him to DH this week. The Mariners feared that if they played Morales too much at DH, this would happen and it did when Smoak went on the DL.
And no, I don't know when Dustin Ackley will be called up.
