Kendrys Morales gets the day off today. He'll still be available for late innings pinch hit duty, but Eric Wedge wanted to rest him and his ailing back. With an off day tomorrow, it would be two good days for Morales.
"I really wanted him to have an off day," Wedge said. "We've pushed him hard and he's been struggling a little bit lately."
Wedge also said that two relievers would be unavailable today. One of them will obviously be Yoervis Medina, who threw 2 1/3 innings and 37 pitches to pick up the win. The other is probably Charlie Furbush, who threw on Friday and Saturdaya. Wedge said he had another reliever he's trying to stay away from. It could be Danny Farquhar, who threw an inning last night, facing five batters.
Franklin Gutierrez is playing center field for the second straight day. Wedge said Gutierrez feels good and with the off day on Monday, it sets up well.
Gutierrez had a homer and a double in his first game back off the disabled list.
"We've missed him this year more than anybody," Wedge said. "He's a separator for us. He's a difference maker."
