Lately, Felix Hernandez has not been pitching like Felix Hernandez.
Today he takes the mound against the Oakland A’s after posting an 8.18 ERA in August.
The Mariners ace, who has a Cy Young Award and a perfect game to his credit, has struggled mightly since beating the Toronto Blue Jays back on July 24. In that span of five starts, Hernandez’s ERA rose from 2.69 to 3.74. Included in that was the especially awful performance against the Boston Red Sox when he gave up 10 runs in less than three innings.
His last start was better but not exactly Felix-like – four runs in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. And because he’s facing the A’s, there’s hope that he might resemble the pitcher that Mariners fans call the King.
In his career, Hernandez has pitched about a full season against the A’s. And what a season it would be.
In 263 1/3 innings, Hernandez has struck out 246 and posted an ERA of 2.63. And his record? 20-8.
But even those numbers are tempered somewhat by Hernandez’s recent past.
On July 4, he dropped a 2-0 decision in Oakland. That day, he gave up 10 hits in seven innings. For the season, he’s 1-1 vs. Oakland with a 3.32 ERA.
So, which Felix is going to show up today?
