Seahawks’ 1st outside free-agent signing: It back-fills their needy tight-end spot
The Seahawks (some say, finally) have a deal with an outside free agent.
It’s to back-fill a position depleted by two departures this week.
At the end of the second day of the NFL’s free-agency negotiation period Tuesday night, Seattle reached agreement with veteran tight end Pharaoh Brown on a one-year contract. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Brown, the former Oregon Duck, will receive a base salary of $3.2 million with a chance to earn up to a total of $3.9 million including incentives.
Brown turns 30 in May. He’s played for the Raiders, Browns, Texans, and last season the Patriots in his pro career that began as an undrafted rookie in 2017. His career high for receptions in a season is 23, while starting 12 games for Houston in 2021.
The 6-foot-5, 246-pound Brown will backup Noah Fant. Fant agreed Monday to sign back with the Seahawks for two years and a reported $21 million instead of leave in free agency.
Tight ends Will Dissly (to the Los Angeles Chargers) and Colby Parkinson (to the Rams) left Seattle this week in free-agent agreements on the first negotiation day for the market, on Monday.
As of midday Tuesday, the Seahawks were one of two NFL teams to yet to agree to a contract with a free agent from another club.
They entered free agency this week with about $50 million in salary-cap space, their most in years, after cutting Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs and Dissly, among other moves.
The Seahawks used a chunk of that cap space to re-sign defensive tackle Leonard Williams. He agreed to a three-year contract worth up to $64.5 million, to keep him from leaving as a free agent.
All signings will begin becoming official on Wednesday when the league’s new year officially begins.
