An NFL team is ripping an NFL reporter. Adam Schefter, formerly of the Denver Post, has been with NFL Network for the last few years. He reported today that the Raiders are expected to fire coach Art Shell after the season.
The Raiders responded with the following statement: "Adam Schefter has always been a false rumor mongerer with respect to the Raiders and anti-Raider based upon his relationship with Denver and Mike Shanahan. No decisions have been made relative to the 2007 Oakland Raiders nor will they be made for some time. Adam Schefter could not have gotten his information from a reliable source because there is only one reliable source and he doesn't trust Adam."
Schefter covered the Broncos for about 15 years. He is a former president of the Pro Football Writers of America. During his time at the Post, he collaborated with coach Mike Shanahan on a book. Earlier this season, Schefter correctly reported that Shanahan would bench Jake Plummer.
The league has financed NFL Network, but the network considers itself a news outlet with editorial independence. We'll see how that plays out over time. I wonder if this is the last in-season expected-to-be-fired story we'll see for a while.
UPDATE: Schefter went on NFL Network at halftime of the Vikings-Packers game tonight and said, basically, that the Raiders can bash him all they want, but their statement said nothing about Shell coming back next season. Only when they do that, Schefter said, will his report be proven wrong.
